A welcome message from Bishop Edward Malesic, 12th bishop of Cleveland

Hello and may the peace of Christ be with all of you. I’m Bishop, Edward Malesic, the new bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Never did I think I would become a bishop. My only plan was to be a parish priest. But there is an old saying: “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans!”

Now, I find myself appointed by the Holy Father as your bishop. Knowing that God constantly surprises us with new blessings, I can honestly say I am so extremely happy and very grateful that God has called me to Northeast Ohio to be your new shepherd.

I am already finding that our Church here is vibrant, with a strong faith, and friendly people. I look forward to meeting everyone from Ashland to Painesville, from Cleveland to Akron, from Lorain to Wooster and all the wonderful places in between. I can’t wait to explore my new home.

If you’re wondering about who I am – first and foremost -- I am a disciple of Jesus and I love his Church. I am a person who is always in awe that the Lord called me to ordained ministry, especially since I started out as a biology major in college. Over the years, Jesus has shown me great love. He is the source of my joy. I want to share his Gospel with everyone. I want to share the Lord with you. My motto, “Serve the Lord with Gladness,” guides how I try to live my life.

No doubt you know that just like any big city and large diocese, we face many challenges together: the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing racial tensions and widening political divisions. We cannot ignore these challenges. But, as Christians, we trust that God provides for us. Christ is even now praying that we might all be one. Jesus wants to lead us to receive his peace. Jesus leads us forward to a future full of hope. The Gospel is simple. Jesus Christ died for us and rose for us and told us to die to self so that we might rise again with him. We move from death to life – that is always the direction of our Church. It is the direction that our Church offers to our society. It is the message that all of us are called to proclaim – that Jesus saves us from those things that want to destroy us. We should not be shy about proclaiming this good news.

Thank you for your warm welcome. I come as a stranger, but I hope to become a friend and a brother to all of you. As I begin to make my way around our diocese, never hesitate to introduce yourself if you see me here and there. I look forward to connecting with you on social media and through Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine so that we can get to know each other better. And finally -- and most importantly -- let’s always keep each other in prayer and support one another on our journey of faith.

May God bless you and those you love.

Bishop Malesic to be installed as 12th bishop of Cleveland on Sept. 14th

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland will welcome Bishop Edward Malesic as its 12th bishop during a 2 p.m. Mass on Sept. 14 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland.

The liturgy, which is a ticketed event, will be livestreamed on the diocesan website. The livestream is presented by the Sisters of Charity Health System, whose ministries in Cleveland include St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, Regina Health Center, Light of Hearts Villa, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland and Joseph’s Home.

Live coverage of the installation and Mass also will be broadcast on the EWTN nationwide cable television network, and radio stations WCCR AM 1260 The Rock and WILB 1060, Living Bread Radio.

Because of the installation, the cathedral will be closed to the public until 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 14.

Confessions, which normally are heard 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will not be available on Sept. 14. The noon Mass also is canceled that day. The monthly holy hour of reparation and healing will take place at 5:45 p.m. and centering prayer will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14.

The normal daily Mass and confession schedule will resume on Sept. 15 at the cathedral. Click here for more information on the cathedral Mass and confession schedules.

Bishop Malesic, 60, comes to Cleveland after serving five years as bishop of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He was named to his new post on July 16 by Pope Francis to succeed Archbishop Nelson Perez, who was elevated to archbishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in February by the Holy Father. Previously, Archbishop Perez led the Cleveland Diocese for 2½ years.

Although the size of the celebration will be scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will follow the ancient rite of the bishop installation ceremony.

Members of the new bishop’s family will join the diocesan hierarchy, including Father Don Oleksiak, who has served as diocesan administrator for the past seven months; Archbishop Christophe Pierre, papal nuncio to the United States who represents Pope Francis; Archbishop Dennis Schnurr, metropolitan of the Province of Cincinnati; and other invited bishops and clergy for the installation liturgy.

Bishop Malesic, a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1987. He served in various pastoral assignments in the Diocese of Harrisburg before being sent in 1996 to study canon law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received his licentiate in canon law in 1998 and served the Diocese of Harrisburg’s Tribunal until Pope Francis appointed him as the bishop of Greensburg in 2015.

Blessing for the Fallen of September 11, 2001

Blessing for the Fallen of 9-11

God of mercy,
in your word of Scripture, you instruct us to“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Give us today the courage to assist those around us who may need our assistance.
Give us patience when we become impatient.

Remind us to pray for all those who perished on United Airlines 93, American Airlines 11, United Airlines 175, American Airlines 77,
and those in the Twin Towers and Pentagon.

Give us a heart
thankful for those who gave their lives
as first responders, as did the men and women who ran into danger to be of aid.

We ask all this in the name of the One
who first responded to our need for a savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
