Pastor’s Column

Dolores Tucky died just about 3 weeks after her husband Richard passed away. They were married for 49 years. Both died unexpectedly but we pray they may be reunited in the kingdom of heaven. Dolores, like her husband, was a person of faith and faithFUL to coming to Mass. But her faith extended beyond that in the care she would show to family members who were ill. She was thought of as generous, unselfish & friendly. May the Lord who gave her these virtues now welcome her to eternal life.

I am grateful to our PSR Director, Joann Deranek, who, along with her husband Joe, welcomed the children back to religious education class last week. I am also very appreciative of the adults who choose to share their Catholic faith with these children as their catechists. Some are learning remotely at home as some of our elementary school children are doing, but they are all learning more about the Lord & his desire for their friendship. May God bless them all throughout this new year.

Congratulations to Nicholas Woody & Danielle Zappitelli who are getting married here this weekend. As we pray in the nuptial blessing, may they live to see their children’s children & one day be welcomed to the eternal wedding feast of heaven.

A reminder that our annual Pet Blessing will take place this Saturday, October 3rd at 11:30am by our Shrine to Mary (weather permitting...otherwise, in the vestibule of the church). October 4th is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi & as you know we now have a statue of this lover of God’s creatures by the west front entrance of the church and rectory office. It appears that the blessing once saved the life of a turtle who hadn’t been taking nourishment for some time until after the blessing! True story. So bring whatever pets you’d like as we thank God for these creatures which bless us with much happiness. Abby will not be in attendance due to environmental allergies but Michaela will be there as her proxy. And Michaela always needs the blessing herself as the next authority in line after me (then comes the Deacon).

Speaking of she who is to be given treats on demand, Michaela’s birthday is this Saturday, September 26th. She will be 8 years old. She’s catching up to me as she’s 56 in human years and I just turned 60 so in a few months we’ll be the same age. I don’t know that I ever thought of this before, but her feast day is this Monday, September 29th, the feast of the Archangels Michael, Raphael & Gabriel. It’s not her feast because she’s an angel (she’s not) but because of her name sake Michael. Like St. Michael who is called upon as our protector, Michaela protects the perimeter of the parish against all enemies, foreign & domestic. May she live her vocation faithfully.

Finally, this Friday, October 2nd (we’re in October already???), is the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. I remember the good Sisters telling us in elementary school to make room for our guardian angel when we were sitting together in church getting ready for Mass. So make sure you leave some space for yours who prays along with you & watches over you always.

Last Tuesday we celebrated the funeral Mass for Agnes Franko. She and her husband Clarence were married for 68 years! They had 5 children and several grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Agnes & Clarence had lived in St. Mark parish where I had grown up. Every week I would see them at the 8am Mass on Sunday, and Agnes had a devotion to Mary and prayed the rosary daily. At her funeral, I mentioned that her name was based on the Latin word “Agnus” which means “Lamb.” To me, she was gentle like a lamb and I will miss seeing her. Let us pray for her husband and children & ask the Lord to receive her soul into the peace of Paradise.
Congratulations to Amanda Pasela & Anthony Zingale who will be getting married this weekend at St. Leo’s, and to Jim Hogue, a member of the parish who will be getting married at Nativity Parish in Lorain. May God give them many happy and fruitful years together.
Once again I want to express my thanks to three parishioners who have made generous donations to our landscaping this summer. Thanks to Rose Zarko, Mary Jane Kozlowski & Rose Pelley for helping to make our grounds look so nice. With the money they donated, we were able to purchase the statue of St. Francis of Assisi that is between the front church door & the rectory office, and the fountain and light and additional trees, plants & shrubs by our Marian shrine. Please be sure to take a walk over to the shrine if you haven’t seen it lately & see how much more beautiful it is. What a great place to pray the rosary or just to sit quietly & enjoy the peace. Debbie McKiver is the landscaper who designed & then did all the landscaping work this summer. Most notably, she replaced the cracking stone around the marquee sign facing Broadview Road with new brick and did the same around the sign you see on the right when you drive in, welcoming you to St. Leo’s. She lined the fence (very nicely repaired/replaced by Christopher Ish) with trees & planted many new trees, shrubs & flowers on the property. We are blessed to have such good people care so much for our parish property.
Thanks too to Mary Kubala for her donation which allowed us to get the vents in the church cleaned out, especially as we become more aware of the air we breath during the coronavirus. Ron Kollar also donated to our landscaping efforts and I’m grateful to all who contribute to our capital improvements fund. Hopefully you can see your donations at work.
I appreciated what Eddie Abufarha had to say last weekend about how the people in the Holy Land are really suffering during this pandemic since they do not receive any kind of stimulus checks or assistance from the government as we do at times like this. So thank you if you purchased anything from the sale of the beautiful olive wood carvings after Mass last weekend. If you couldn’t be here due to social distancing at this time, you can view everything they offer on their website, holylandcarvings.com. We have a link to it on our parish website as well. I look forward to the Holy Land pilgrimage organized by Eddie’s travel company that will take place whenever this pandemic is behind us.

Steve Simonik and his wife Mary Kay have been parishioners for a long time. Sadly, Steve had lung cancer and died at the age of 86 and we celebrated his funeral on Saturday, September 5th. I had a most wonderful visit with them the day before I left on vacation which happened to be their 59th wedding anniversary. It was a touching moment when 59 beautiful dark red roses were delivered while I was there...a gift Steve had ordered for his wife. They told me many stories of their time together and of good times with their children & grandchildren. Steve lived a life of faith and he will be missed. Our sympathy goes out to Mary Kay and we offer her our support during this time.

We also pray for David J. Kucharski, the step-son of Jerry Kelly, who lost his wife Maureen just a few days before David’s unexpected death. May God grant David eternal rest.

Congratulations to Salvatore (“Sonny”) Capone & his new wife, Alexandra (Dighero) who were wedded on Friday, September 4th. May they have many wonderful years together as husband and wife.

We welcome Emma Grace Zabiegala as the newest member of the Church as she will be baptized this Sunday after the 11am Mass. May she come to know that she is a loved child of God.

This weekend a family from Bethlehem will be here to display their home-made olive wood carvings and have them available for purchase. They have been here several times before and I have bought many of their beautiful pieces as they make great gifts! And before you know it, Christmas will be here. The sale of these items benefit their families back in the Holy Land, where times are especially difficult due to the coronavirus. These are also the people who own Trinity Travels, the agency which will be coordinating our pilgrimage to the Holy Land when it is safe for us to travel again. I have come to know them personally and find them sincere and filled with deep faith. Please support them as you can and appreciate the beauty of their religious art this weekend.

This Monday, Bishop Malesic will be installed as the 12th Bishop of Cleveland during a limited-seating Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on East 9th & Superior, the bishop’s church in the Diocese. His installation can be viewed live-streamed on the diocesan website (dioceseofcleveland.org) and I look forward to watching it. We have waited over 6 months for the announcement of his assignment by Pope Francis and I look forward to meeting the man about whom I have heard many wonderful things. Once he has been installed, we will pray for “Edward our Bishop” in the Eucharistic Prayer at each Mass, after we have prayed for “Francis our Pope.” May he lead and serve us well.

It was great to see our school students again as the new school year began last week. Our Principal & teachers have done a great job in adjusting to these challenging times and our maintenance crew has worked hard not only to prepare for opening day but to keep the building clean and well disinfected each day of school. May God keep our children happy & safe.

Last Sunday while in North Carolina, I looked up Catholic Churches in the area so that I could attend Mass, but each one had the requirement of signing up for the particular Mass you wanted to attend, & each one was already at capacity! The exception was a Mass that was in Spanish, and so I probably would have understood only about 5% of what was being said. So I did what many of you do and participated at the 11am Mass through the livestream at St. Leo the Great. I appreciated the words of our guest, Fr. John Fisher, and when he mentioned my name at the end of Mass, I wanted to let him know that I heard him but gratefully you can’t use the microphone of the iPad in order to be heard on the other end. Anyway, I plan on supporting the good work of Cross Catholic Outreach and encourage you to consider a donation to them if you haven’t already done so. I was amazed at how far $25 goes to helping those people in Africa who otherwise would be without the basic necessities of life. We hope to have Fr. Fisher back again some time and I know he enjoyed dinner out with the Berigan’s so thanks to them too for offering him hospitality.
I had a good relaxing vacation in North Carolina & enjoyed visiting the Biltmore Estate which I know some parishioners have seen as well. I’ll be mentioning what I learned on my tour in a homily when the time (gospel) is right. I climbed a lot of stairs & almost decided not to take a 2nd tour I bought where they showed you how the servants lived, but I’m glad I did it (though it required that you climb about 250 steps during that tour alone!).
I am actually writing this column on Tuesday, September 1st. Once again the summer is behind us and our parish school will be opening the day after Labor Day. Please keep the school students, teachers and staff in your prayers as they begin this challenging year. Many have worked so hard this summer to prepare for a school year during COVID-19, most especially our Principal, Denise Burns, and we are grateful to the teachers for taking on the additional burden of learning (ironically) how to teach remotely for the students who will be staying home. I look forward to seeing even the masked faces of our children again.
I ask your prayers for Father Brown, pastor of Mary, Queen of Peace, who informed his parishioners that he has a detached retina & will be having surgery to repair it. I ask that you keep a parishioner in prayer who also just had surgery for a detached retina. I can sympathize with them as I had the same thing back in 2002 and nearly lost my sight in that eye. It’s a long process of recovery as you have to keep your head down looking at the floor for 10 days & then there’s a gas bubble in your eye which takes a number of weeks to dissipate before you can see clearly again. Please pray to St. Lucy, the patron of eyesight, for her intercession on their behalf.
